Black and white art, acrylic on canvas 16″ x 20″
This black and white art piece symbolizes the invisibility of black women as individuals in modern-day popular culture. As black women we occupy a negative space, our bodies and ethnic stereotypical tropes are commodified and replicated as fashionable and attainable. we are homogenized through the fetishism of modern-day anti-racism however our individuality is erased and we are forced to blend into the background of popularism.
The use of negative space in this piece of black and white art has been chosen to create a visual sense of the dichotomy that this modern-day fetishism causes to the black female. As our bodies are being copied on plastic surgery tables around the world and our caricature are hogging the spotlight on reality shows, we become a faceless version of this creation of the black women in the minds of the masses and our true selves gets lost and blends into the background of this fabrication.
Our individuality is stripped until all that is left is the physical manifestation of scripted female blackness that leaves us without a face or a soul. Just a body
