The Proper Pour Society is one of Royal Teabridge’s most active and influential community organisations. Founded in 1924 by a group of residents seeking a fresh approach to village life, the Society has long championed progress, innovation, and the belief that traditions should evolve alongside the community they serve.

EARLY BEGINNINGS

Whilst respectful of Teabridge’s rich history, the Society was established in response to what many younger residents viewed as the increasingly formal and traditional outlook of the Teapot Society. Its founders believed that preserving the town’s heritage was important, but that embracing new ideas was equally essential if Teabridge was to thrive in the modern world.

A Vision for the Future (1924–1950)

From its earliest days, the Proper Pour Society attracted artists, entrepreneurs, business owners, teachers, and community leaders eager to shape the future of the town.

Rather than focusing solely on preserving customs, the Society concentrated on creating new traditions and supporting initiatives designed to strengthen the local economy, encourage creativity, and enhance community life. Its members quickly became known for their ambitious ideas and willingness to challenge convention.

Shaping Modern Teabridge (1950–Present)

Over the decades, the Society has played a role in many of Teabridge’s most significant developments, including the restoration of Market Row, the establishment of the Summer Concert Series, improvements to the Artists’ District, and the expansion of community events that attract visitors from across Oxfordshire and beyond.

Many of the initiatives that residents now take for granted were originally championed by members of the Proper Pour Society, whose influence continues to be felt throughout the town.

Community Projects and Civic Leadership

The Society has long encouraged residents to take an active role in shaping the future of Teabridge. Members regularly organise fundraising campaigns, business networking events, cultural programmes, charitable initiatives, and community improvement projects.

The organisation is particularly known for bringing together residents from different backgrounds to collaborate on ideas that strengthen the local economy, support independent businesses, and enhance public spaces throughout the town. The Society was also instrumental in establishing Teabridge Pride Festival in 1992, helping create an annual celebration that reflects the town’s commitment to inclusion, community spirit, and civic participation.

Its practical approach to problem-solving has earned the Society a reputation as one of Teabridge’s most effective civic organisations.

The Proper Pour Archives

The Proper Pour Society maintains an extensive collection of photographs, project records, and historical correspondence documenting more than a century of civic involvement.

Amongst its archives are several letters exchanged with the Tipsy Teapot Society during the early years of their rivalry. Whilst largely cordial in tone, they reveal that debates concerning the future of Teabridge have been taking place for far longer than many residents realise.

The collection remains one of the most valuable records of modern Teabridge history and continues to grow with each passing year.

Headquarters at Teabridge Taproom

Today, the Society is headquartered at the historic Teabridge Taproom, where members gather throughout the year to organise events, discuss community projects, and occasionally debate whether Teabridge is embracing change quickly enough.

The Taproom serves as both a meeting place and a symbol of the Society’s practical, forward-thinking approach to community life.

The Society Today

Today, the Proper Pour Society continues to attract residents who value fresh ideas, creative thinking, and community leadership.

Its members remain committed to ensuring that Teabridge honours its past whilst embracing the possibilities of the future. More than a century after its founding, the Society continues to help shape the direction of Royal Teabridge and remains one of the town’s most influential civic organisations.

The Society also remains a regular contender for the prestigious Crown of Upper Distinction during the annual New Era Celebration, where members proudly showcase their contributions to the town and continue their long-standing competition with the Tipsy Teapot Society.
